GIS Mission and Activities

Mission of the GIS Department

To support the Council's planning, transit and environmental services activities through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and facilitate the sharing of geospatial data among government agencies within the region.

Activities of the GIS Department

The GIS department uses computer technologies that display and process information geographically. The GIS department helps Council staff to use this technology to efficiently and accurately analyze and communicate about issues of concern to the Council. Some examples at the Council where GIS technology is used include:

  • GIS helps bus patrons plan their itinerary.
  • Environmental Services staff uses GIS to manage interceptor systems.
  • Community Development uses GIS to understand and plan for the Region's growth.

The GIS department focuses on four areas:

  • Products
Produce printed and digital maps, graphs, tables, images and applications using GIS data to support Council planning and operational functions.
  • Support
Support the use of GIS throughout the Council and develop access to GIS through software and web based GIS products.
  • Data
Create and process geospatial data for use by Council GIS users and for use in Council maps, web services and products.
  • MetroGIS
Provide staff support for the MetroGIS initiative. MetroGIS promotes GIS data and application sharing among government organization in the region.
